Description: The first denga struck in silver, was a Russian monetary unit with a value latterly equal to ½ kopeck. Denga coins were made only in the southern Russian principalities; the state of Novgorod and the City of Pskov made their own slightly larger coins. In 1535, a reform took place, with the northern "novgorodka" being valued at twice the southern denga or "moskovka". In the 1540s novgorodkas depicting a horseman with a spear began to be made, and novgorodkas were thenceforth known as kopecks. The minting of silver dengas have decreased after the 16th century, as they are found less often in hoards, but they are known until the reign of Peter the Great. During the time of Peter the Great, dengas transitioned from silver to copper, and from undated to Byzantine dates in Cyrillic to Julian dates in Cyrillic. After Peter's reign, dates were denoted using the common notation of Arabic numerals. In the coinage reform of 1700 they reappeared as much larger copper coins, and mintage continued, off and on, until 1916, just before the Romanov dynasty ended in 1917. A coin of this type was produced in 1730-1754 and is one of the most massive coins of the empire. On some specimens, there may be a partial edging along the circumference of the front and back sides, consisting of large dots.On the obverse of the coin, the coat of arms of the Russian Empire of the first half of the 18th century is depicted in a simplified way (without a shield on the chest and without the ribbon of the St. Andrew's Order) - a two-headed eagle with spread wings, on the heads of the imperial crowns, above which is the same, but larger. In its paws, the eagle holds symbols of power - a scepter and an orb.On the reverse of the coin depicts a shield with a floral ornament around and a rosette at the top. In the middle of the shield,in an oval frame, the denomination and the year of minting are indicated in three lines - "DE NGA 1749". There is a doublehorizontal line between the denomination and the year. The eagle has a tail with two curved feathers, the rest of the tailfeathers are straight. The wings have 12 feathers. The power is located close to the wing. In catalogs, it is sometimes referredto as the eagle of 1748. The tail is wider. Elizabeth Petrovna (1709 – 1762) reigned as Empress of Russia from 1741 until her death in 1762. She remains one of the most popular Russian monarchs because of her decision not to execute a single person during her reign, her numerous construction projects, and her strong opposition to Prussian policies.
