It was dedicated to his younger brother Carl, a Presbyterian minister, who passed away at the age of 33. This epic painting portrays the perspective of Jesus on the cross gazing down at Mary Magdalene, Roman soldiers gambling for his clothes, and his Apostles who witness his suffering and sacrifice. Kennedy built the unique pecky cedar wood frame for this large 45"x 59" oil painting. BIOJ. William Kennedy, 1903-1996, was an American Scene and Abstract Expressionist painter.A graduate of the Cincinnati Art Academy, Carnegie Tech, University of Illinois.He was also a Fellow of the Tiffany Foundation in New York.His early years were spent painting in the artist meccas of the 1920s:Paris France Concarneau, France Taormina, Sicily, Taos, New MexicoProvincetown, Massachusetts William was a professor of art at the University of Illinois for 45 years teaching painting, drawing, and materials and techniques.He also formulated paints that were produced by Permanent Pigments.
