Description: Cat Madonna and Child. Antique 1800s die-cut scrapbook lithograph, Victorian era. Large; 11.75" tall and about 7.75" wide at the base. This 19th century die-cut has little of the " cats are cute " feeling which is common today; it's more " cats have sharp teeth and can be pretty scary ". The cat mother and cat child are in a Madonna and Child pose, but with toothy grin and staring eyes mother dosesn' look very motherly, and kittten doesn't look very cuddly. In fact mother just looks hungry and the two of them look a little vicious. Mother cat is wearing a red headwrap and child is wrapped in a material of the same color; not quite blood red, but still red, and with a gypsy scarf kind of appearance. Mother stares steadily at her wrapped kitten, showing her teeth. A sharp fang can be seen at the corner of her mouth. The claws on her big foot paws are just barely contracted. Kitten isn't looking at her. Kitten also has a big, toothy mischievous grin, and is looking away; maybe a bird or a mouse has caught its hungry little cat eyes. -------- This large die-cut lived for many years in an old scrapbook. It has condition issues; wear at the edges, damage, loss at the upper-left corner and elsewhere. A former owner removed it from the scrapbook pretty roughly, and applied some tape to the back side to help keep it together. Not in perfect condition, but quite old and very scarce. Carefully packed for shipment to the buyer.
