The United States government first made plans for a branch of the U.S. Mint in Denver, Colorado, as early as 1862, shortly after gold was first discovered in Colorado. An official assay office opened in 1863 to process gold and silver brought in by prospectors. However, it was not until 1896 that a site was purchased in Denver for a mint facility; the Denver Mint finally opened in 1906. The Denver Mint was equipped with the finest and most up-to-date technology for minting coins, and it also had a refinery to process local gold and silver. All coins struck at the Denver Mint bear the "D" mint mark. This collection features three classic U.S. coins that were struck at the Denver Mint in the early 20th century. They are among the earliest coins made in Denver. The Lincoln "wheat ears" Penny was first made in Denver in 1911. A legendary American coin, it features the timeless "wheat ears" reverse design that was a celebration of America's agricultural heritage. The obverse depicts Abraham Lincoln, the first real person to be depicted on a circulating U.S. coin. The Buffalo Nickel was designed by James Earle Fraser, a famed sculptor who was known for his dramatic images of the American West. His portrait of a Native American on the obverse was a composite of three famous chiefs, while the buffalo on the reverse was modeled after Black Diamond. The Mercury Silver Dime was designed by sulptor Adolph A. Weinman, whose exquisite design shows Liberty wearing a winged cap to symbolize freedom of thought. The coin became known as the "Mercury" Dime because the public mistakenly thought it showed Mercury, the Roman messenger of the gods who wore wings on his sandals and cap. Each coin was made in 90% silver.
