Description: antique original Civil war flag staff TOPPER Model of 1840 staff eagle Civilwar EAGLE battle flag flag finial this came out of a northern Illinois GAR hall when the contents were liquidated via public auction back in the 1980s this purchased for a substantial amount of money at the time , Where it remained in a personal collection for many years This must have had some important historical meaning - but unfortunately the history of it was lost with the last members of that GAR HALL It measures approximately. 6 1/2 inches tall & 6 inches wide Cast gillted bronze or brass During the war, the wings of flag staff eagles were routinely bent inward, in order to facilitate removing the battle flag from the protective transportation case and/ or to avoid the flag from getting entangled or ripped during action Antique battle flag Federal style eagle finial, ca. 1860s, This eagle retains an excellent amount of detail throughout, on the feet, wings, and feathers throughout, with most of the gilding still intact. It is typical of the finial used on regimental and American flags carried during the American civil war DONT PASS IT UP !
