Description: c 1870 Allerton Flow Blue Gaudy ‘DAHLIA’ Child’s Cup & Saucer & Plate Staffordshire Reference: 1) Doris Lechler, ‘English Toy China,’ Figure # 128, pp 47, 162. 2) Lorraine Punchard, ‘Playtime Pottery & Porcelain From the United Kingdom and the United States,’ p 93, middle. This is an early scarce miniature child’s Tea Trio consisting of a Cup & Saucer & Plate; made by Charles Allerton & Sons, Staffordshire, England, c 1870. The Plate is marked on the bottom ‘STAFFORDSHIRE ENGLAND’ and there is a decorator’s mark of ‘92’ on the bottom of the Saucer. The pieces in this Trio have saturated, deep Cobalt Flow Blue that also appears on the bottoms, which probably occurred during firing due to the evaporation of the glaze and the heat of the kiln while stacked. The ‘DAHLIA’ pattern is hand painted in deep cobalt flow blue with gold accents, and with rust red berries; pieces vary due to the hand-crafted nature of this set, which is part of its charm. This Trio consists of: (1) Cup: 3.25” W x 2.5” D x 2” H(1) Saucer: 4.5” W x 1” H(1) Plate: 5.375” W x .75” H Please excuse the white glare reflections in the photos. Due to the deep flow blue and hand-painting technique, this Trio has variations and is part of the naïve charm that is so attractive to many collectors. This miniature child’s Tea Trio has tremendous display value and is in excellent condition. Skips, bumps, crazing, and additional minor typical firing imperfections sporadically may appear consistent with hand-painting and production at the time these pieces were made.
