Bert Williams (November 12, 1874 - March 4, 1922) was a Bahamian-American entertainer. He was one of the pre-eminent entertainers of the Vaudeville era and one of the most popular comedians for all audiences of his time. Williams was by far the best-selling black recording artist before 1920. In 1918, the New York Dramatic Mirror called Williams "one of the great comedians of the world". In 1893, while still a teenager, Williams joined different West Coast minstrel shows. He met his partner George Walker in 1893. He and Walker performed song-and-dance numbers, comic dialogues and skits and humorous songs. They performed together till 1909 when Walker suffered a stroke. From this point on Bert Williams led a very successful solo career. He was the 1st black to perform in the Ziegfeld Follies beginning in 1910. Williams appeared in several Ziegfeld Follies editions (1910, 1911, 1912, 1914, 1915, 1916, 1917 and 1919) and other musical comedies. Williams' stage career lagged after his final Follies appearance in 1919. Williams became sick and developed pneumonia in December of 1921 while performing. He returned to New York, but his health worsened. He died at his home, 2309 Seventh Avenue in Manhattan, New York City on March 4, 1922 at the age of 47. This CD presents many of the recordings made by Williams as a solo performer. These were made during the peak of his career and several were performed in various editions of the Ziegfeld Follies. All recordings have been digitally restored by Vintage Recordings. ******************************************************* Normal 0 false false false EN-US X-NONE X-NONE Bert Williams (Encore 2) [Comic Ragtime and Minstrel Songs] (Recorded 1917-1922) Several Items will have a symbol next to a song.
