Description: "Le Symbolisme Russe: La Rose Bleue," published by Europalia for Fonds Mercator, Belgium, 2005, 144 pages, softcover in thick wraps, 12" by 9". Text in French. Superb book published for a Belgian exhibition on turn-of-the-century Russian Symbolist art, profiling the work of 33 artists in over 100 color plates of mostly paintings, with some sculptural work in the rear. While Modernist Soviet artwork is largely defined by the color red, the generation preceding it embraced the color blue, employed here in moody landscapes and symbolic tableaus. Includes word by Mikhail Vroubel, Victor Borissov-Moussatov, Sergey Sudeikin, Leon Bakst, Ivan Nefedov, Nikolai Milioti, Pietr Savvitch Outkine, and Nikolai Roerich, among others. I've offered many books on turn-of-the-century Russian art before, but much of the work here is unfamiliar to me. Highly recommended and scarce - the Europalia books are generally published in editions of 1,000 or less, and sell out quickly. In excellent condition. Buyer to pay for item plus shipping.
