Description: For sale is an Antique copy of Thomas Baily Aldrich’s “Friar Jerome’s Beautiful Book, Etc.” published by Houghton, Mifflin, The Riverside Press, Cambridge MA, 1888. This is a rare copy of an early soft cover edition. Volume includes selections from Aldrich's earlier works, “Cloth of Gold” and “Flower and Thorn.” “Thomas B. Aldrich” and the date “October 17th 1889” are inscribed on the first title page (see picture). This signature is unverified, but it very closely resembles images of verified Aldrich signatures found on the Internet. This book was purchased at an estate sale where numerous other rare and collectable books were sold; lending credibility to the Aldrich signature as authentic. He is notable for his long editorship of The Atlantic Monthly, His talent was many-sided. He was well known for his form in poetry. His successive volumes of verse, chiefly The Ballad of Babie Bell (1856), Pampinea, and Other Poems (1861), Cloth of Gold (1874), Flower and Thorn (1876), Friar Jerome's Beautiful Book (1881), Mercedes and Later Lyrics (1883), Wyndham Towers (1889), and the collected editions of 1865, 1882, 1897 and 1900, showed him to be a poet of lyrical skill and light touch. Cover pictorial with red ink is very faded, but cover is intact with only soiling at the edges, very little wear. Binding has broken in a couple of spots, and cover has pulled away a bit. Heavy stock, no missing pages, text clean, pages tanned, corners bumped, soiling on edges and a few edge tears. 94 pages, measures: 6 ¼” x 4”.
