Description: Ariel Poems SELF TO SELF, Walter de la Mare c.1927 Illustrated Pamphlet, Faber & Gwyer Self to Self by Walter de la Mare, wood engravings by Blair Hughes-Stanton. The Ariel Poems were a series of pamphlets that contained illustrated poems published by Faber and Gwyer at 24 Russell Square, London. The series had 38 titles published between 1927 and 1931, this being No. 11. Each numbered pamphlet had an illustrated cover naming the author and illustrator. Four pages were sewn inside the cover. The frontispiece had another illustration, usually multicolored. Following that page was the poem. Several authors and illustrators had multiple pamphlets. Size about 7-1/4 x 5 inches. Condition: Just Good, with repaired separation to the cover spine fold and insides of the fold-overs of the canary yellow cover by archival tissue tape (see photos). If you have always wanted to frame the two plates by Hughes-Stanton without feeling sacrilegious about it, this would be a good candidate. Walter John de la Mare OM CH (25 April 1873 – 22 June 1956) was an English poet, short story writer and novelist. He is probably best remembered for his works for children, for his poem "The Listeners", and for his psychological horror short fiction, including "Seaton's Aunt" and "All Hallows". In 1921, his novel Memoirs of a Midget won the James Tait Black Memorial Prize for fiction, and his post-war Collected Stories for Children won the 1947 Carnegie Medal for British children's books. Blair Rowlands Hughes-Stanton (22 February 1902 – 6 June 1981) was a major figure in the English wood-engraving revival in the twentieth century. He was the son of the artist Sir Herbert Hughes-Stanton. He exhibited with the Society of Wood Engravers, but was more in sympathy with the philosophy of the English Wood Engraving Society, of which he was a founding member in 1925.
