Description: Welcome to Antiques & Moore! This listing is for a beautiful Whiting/Gorham reticulated Sterling Silver swing handle sugar basket with a fitted cobalt glass liner. Measures 9" high (including upright handle) with a maximum width of 5", cobalt liner is 4" in diameter at top and the base is 3 1/4" in diameter. Weighs 6.4 ounces. The silver body of this sugar basket is completely reticulated/pierced decorated and stands on a pedestal base. The swing handle is decorated with a delicate floral design with a cartouche in the center with unusual embossed monogram "A A G". The silver is in excellent Estate condition reflecting very little use with no dents, dings or scratches. The cobalt glass liner is in very good condition, although there is a tiny nick on the upper edge (see photos). No other noted flaws. This lovely sugar basket is fully marked with the old Whiting trademark stamp and "Gorham". The Whiting Silver Company was absorbed into Gorham in 1924. Sugar baskets began to be replaced in the early 19th Century when sugar bowls began to be designed as a part of tea and coffee services.
