Description: Antique Victorian 19th Century Turned Olive Wood Trinket / Jewellery Box - c.1880 ~Welcome to my auction for this nice quality small 19th century box~ This really nice, tactile and most usable box dating from approximately the last quarter of the 19th century, or possibly even a little earlier. The box has been beautifully turned in two pieces from olive wood - the distinctive grain and slightly sweet smell are indicative of this type of wood.As olive wood is not indigenous to the U.K, it my opinion that this was a souvenir piece from the holy land. You often find olive wood pieces, sometimes with inked inscriptions to them, that have been brought back to the U.K. after a visit or pilgrimage to the holy land by European travellers. These can date from the 18th century, all the way through to the 20th century. The item has been lathe turned, with additional chip carved decoration some some carved beading to the lid.To the underside of the box you can just see a tiny indentation to the centre where it was attached to the lathe. What's also nice to see is the level of wear and patina to the base (see pictures 5 and 6), which are excellent indicators of age and use - I recently sold a Victorian wooden mortar and pestle which had an almost identical level of wear to the underside. The inside of the box is lined with a red wine coloured velvet fabric to both the base and the lid - it's impossible to say with any certainty whether this fabric has always been there, but in my opinion, it's been there a very long time indeed! The soft lining would suggests that this would mean the box has been used for jewellery or trinkets. The box measures approximately 12cm across the lid, with a width across the base of approximately 10.5cm.The height is approximately 6cm and the unpacked weight is 184g. The condition of the item is generally excellent - the box is of solid construction with no splits or cracks, and a nice overall colour and patina. A couple of extremely minor condition considerations are:A small piece of carved beading missing to the lid, judging by the patina, this happened some time ago (see picture 9).The velvet liner to the base is coming away very slightly from one side of the box - you may wish to glue this back in place, or leave it as it is, it's really not detrimental at all to its appearance or use. Please study the images provided to satisfy yourself as to the condition and description of the item offered - if you have any further questions, please ask and I'll be happy to oblige. P&P to U.K. addresses is £4.50 (signed for mail) - P&P to international addresses is £15.95 (tracked / signed for mail)There have been recent significant rises in international shipping costs due to the ongoing pandemic ans lack of passenger flights - so apologies if overseas shipping seems expensive. Thanks for looking!
