Description: This is a RARE and charming Antique Early California Impressionist Folk Art Horse & Dogs Oil Painting on canvas, by seldomly seen early California female painter, Elva Lorraine Simmons (1911 - 1986.) This work depicts a large black stallion, being accosted by two playful Jack Russel Terriers, which are popularly used on farms and in rural settings. Simmon's was obviously a trained landscape painter, as the background of this image is delicately rendered in gold hues, with sparse pockets of wildflowers throughout. Signed and dated: "Elva Simmons 1936," in the lower left corner. I could not find much biographical information on this artist, aside from her mention in Edan Hughe's Artists in California: 1786 - 1940, but perhaps you know more about this artist or her work. To my knowledge, this is the first and only painting by this artist to ever be publicly offered for sale since the invention of the Internet. Approximately 22 3/4 x 26 3/4 inches (including frame.) Actual artwork is approximately 20 x 24 inches. Very good condition for nearly a century of age, with one small tear, a few tiny areas of paint loss, and a couple spots of light soiling (please see photos.) Acquired in Pasadena, California. If you like what you see, I encourage you to make an Offer. Please check out my other listings for more wonderful and unique artworks!
