ABOUT THE COMPANY꞉ Wheaton Industries was a long-standing famous manufacturer of glassware and ceramics products in the United States. The company was founded by Theodore C. Wheaton, a pharmacist and businessman, who in 1883 settled in Millville, in Cumberland County, New Jersey (southeast of Philadelphia). Southern New Jersey had by that time emerged as the center of United States glass manufacturing because of the prevalence of natural resources such as wood, sand, and silica. Wheaton became particularly interested in the manufacture of pharmaceutical glassware, and in 1888, he established a small factory on the outskirts of Millville to manufacture his own bottles. The company became known as the T.C. Wheaton Company and at its height, Wheaton had 41 factories throughout the United States with subsidiaries in 20 other countries. ABOUT THE CHEMICAL꞉ Ammonium hydroxide NH4OH, also known as ammonia solution, ammonia water, ammonium hydroxide, ammoniacal liquor, ammonia liquor, aqua ammonia, aqueous ammonia, or (inaccurately) ammonia, is a solution of ammonia in water. It can be denoted by the symbols NH3(aq). Although the name ammonium hydroxide suggests an alkali with composition [NH+4][OH−], it is actually impossible to isolate samples of NH4OH. Ammonium Hydroxide is a colorless solution of Ammonia in water with a pungent odor. It is usually found in concentrations up to 30% and is used in household cleaners, photography, and fertilizers, textiles, rubber, and pharmaceuticals, and is also used as a refrigerant. Ammonium Hydroxide can affect you when inhaled, is a corrosive chemical, and contact can severely irritate and burn the skin and eyes leading to eye damage. Exposure can irritate the lungs, eyes, nose and throat. Higher exposures may cause a build-up of fluid in the lungs (pulmonary edema). Repeated skin contact can cause dermatitis.
