Description: A German silver Hanukkah lamp from circa 1830 is an exquisite piece of Judaica, reflecting the neoclassical and Biedermeier styles prevalent in early 19th-century Germany, characterized by clean lines, geometric shapes, and restrained ornamentation. The early 19th century in Germany was a time of significant change, with the Napoleonic Wars and subsequent shifts in political and social structures. Jewish artisans were active in the production of Judaica, often influenced by the broader artistic trends of the time. The Jewish community in Germany was well-established and known for its intellectual, cultural, and economic contributions. Despite facing various restrictions, they maintained vibrant religious and cultural practices. Hanukkah lamp's backplate is decorated in a Baroque style with a framed ornamentation of flowing acanthus leaves centered by a geometrically designed diamond patterned center. A cartouche centered on the backplate encircled by stylized foliate motifs has an engraved dedication written in Hebrew; " For a Remembrance (in merit) from Shmuel the son of Yehuda Aryeh (dedicated) in honor of Yaakov the son of Moshe". Affixed to the top of the backplate is a servant candleholder with a similar acanthus leaf handle. At the bottom, a rectangular compartment is applied to the backplate and contains eight long rectangular oil wells with protuberant wick spouts which are covered by a hinged panel. Four acanthus ornamented leg supports are set at the lower corners of the rectangular compartment of the Hanukkah lamp. The Hanukkah lamp reflects the artistic traditions of the German Jewish community, blending Jewish symbolism with contemporary design elements. This piece is considered highly collectible to collectors of Judaica interested in early 19th-century European silverwork and would particularly value this piece given its age, material, and origin. weight, 11.92ozt Size Hight 17 cm, width 16.3, depth 5
