This nodule has been cut in half and polished to show off the Septarian interior. The two sides of the pair measure 31mm each at their widest points. Septarian forms from decomposing sea shells that had an attraction for the surrounding sediment, forming mud balls under the sea. Tide and wave action rolled these balls around, creating sedimentary balls of a larger size. As the ocean receded, the balls were left to dry and crack, allowing Calcite crystals to form within them. A thin wall of Calcite transformed into Aragonite, dividing the shale exteriors from the Calcite crystals. The name Septarian is derived from these dividing walls (septum in Latin.) This nodule was then cut and polished in Morocco. Pair weighs over 2 lbs. A great Septarian nodule for display, collection and study.
