Description: These two 4 3/4 by 3 inch original snapshots are of the Dornier Do X D-1929 flying boat in the water. The photos were with other photos from the estate of long term employee of Eastern Air Lines. The Do X flying boat was made by the German company Dornier and financed by the German Transport Ministry in 1929, and at the time was the largest and heaviest flying boat in existence. In 1930, it made its first transatlantic flight from Germany to New York, with stops at the Netherlands, UK, France, Spain, Portugal, Cape Verde, Natal (Brazil) and Puerto Rico.. There were problems along the way that required delays for repair, and once in New York, it remained 9 months to have work done on its engines. There were sightseeing tours and it attracted thousands of tourists - I guessing these photos were taken by one of those visitors. A tiny American flag is visible in the photo. The boat continued to have problems, and was put in a German aviation museum where it was destroyed by an RAF bomb in 1943. Only 2 other Do X boats were built -both were sent to Italy and eventually scrapped in 1937. Both photos have tape residue on the corners and some fading. See my other listings for 2 more groups of photos from the Eastern employee.
