Description: Magnetic ointments were popular in the late 19th century and were used to treat a wide variety of illnesses until the United States' Food and Drug Act of 1906 impeded the sale of products deemed to be fraudulent, which magnetic ointments were. Perhaps the best-known magnetic medicine was Trask's Magnetic Ointment made by the David Ransom & Son company of Buffalo, New York. The ointment is a “remedy for pain, nervous headache, inflammation of the bowels, burns, fever sores..." Here we have 2 examples of this amazing medicine. It cured almost everything! They stand 2 ½” high and 1 ¼” square. I have listed both here to show the differences in the same bottle. They are never the same. It’s what makes old bottles so interesting to collectors. The first is a pretty standard square ringed lip with nice clear embossing “A TRASKS MAGNETIC OINTMENT” on 3 sides. It has some nice bubbles but stands symmetrical and straight just like a good bottle should. The second one was either much older or the bottle maker had some medicinal alcohol for lunch, and this was the last thing he made. It is inconsistently poured and not level. If you look at the base one corner is leaning out like it’s running away. The embossing is barely legible. The neck leans to the left and the lip is just messy and inconsistent with pull lines and wonderful flaws. They are in dug condition with some haze but no damage. You need to have them both.
