Description: I am offering for sale an early 19th Century gilt bronze French officer's epee sword with Mother of Pearl grips and a triangular blade with etchings of military motifs. The clam shell guard depicts Athena, the Greek Goddess of War, seated among various military symbols, including flags, polearms, shields, fasces and a cuirass. The handle is made of bronze and covered in gold (gilt). This model is a variation of that shown in the authoritative book titled Epees Portees en France des Origines a Nos Jours by Jean L’hoste as figure 778 on page 412. It is in excellent condition with minor, age appropriate wear to the blade. The rear grip has been reattached. It measures 35 1/4" long from the top of the pommel to the tip of the blade. There is no scabbard.
