Description: Express Shipping Worldwide is Free The Birdsville Track and Other PoemsBy Douglas StewartPublished by Angus and Robertson, Sydney, 1955First Edition, with the dustjacket, not price-clipped The dustjacket design and double page title plate are by Norman Lindsay. In A. D. Hope's review of this book in the Sydney Morning Herald, 20th August, 1955, while denigrating much of Douglas Stewart's poetry also takes a swipe at Norman Lindsay. He refers to the dustjacket and whilst agreeing the Birdsville Track could be unpleasant country it couldn't be quite so bad as the artist depicted it. It was a few years later when a family of five perished on the Track from thirst and privation. The sequence of poems from which this book takes its name was written in 1953 after a visit by the author to the Lake Eyre basin in Central Australia. The landscape reflected in the poems is one of the most remote and arid in Australia; a place of grim humour where travelers scribble rhymed jests on bleached bullock skulls; of lonely mirage-haunted death where the human spirit is symbolized by the ruins of a Lutheran Mission, by the Dogger - the lonely man - and a young aboriginal stockman wearing a sombrero who, "free as the winds that blow along the old dry rivers" becomes, to himself "his own hero".In grey hardcover with a red cloth spine, with titles in gilt along the spine, in 76 pages.
