Forrest Harrill “Smoky” Burgess (February 6, 1927 - September 15, 1991) caught a three-pitcher no-hitter in 1956 and was behind the plate in 1959 when Harvey Haddix took a perfect game into the 13th inning only to lose 1-0 after pitching 12-2/3 innings allowing only one hit. Smoky caught and pinch-hit for 18 seasons in the Major Leagues with the Chicago Cubs (1949, 1951), the Philadelphia Phillies (1952-1955), the Cincinnati Reds (1955-1958), the Pittsburgh Pirates (1959-1964) and the Chicago White Sox (1964-1967). Burgess was one of the best pinch hitters in Major League history, retired with a record 507 pinch at-bats and is among the top five pinch-hitters of all-time with 145. Smoky was a solid batter and an accomplished fielder as he posted a .988 career fielding percentage with 5,214 putouts, 441 assists, 63 double plays, 71 errors and a 37% caught stealing percentage in 5,726 chances. He was a nine-time MLB All-Star and handled the 1960 Pittsburgh Pirates pitching staff that captured the World Series over the New York Yankees. Smoky Burgess finished his career with a .295 career batting average, had 1,318 hits including 230 doubles and 126 home runs, scored 485 runs and drove in 673 runs over 18 years.
