1944- Canal Town & 1950- Sunrise to Sunset 2 Novels by Adams.

Description: 1944- Canal Town, Samuel Hopkins Adams. Hardback. First Printing (Erie Canal). I also have 1950- "Sunrise to Sunset" by Samuel Hopkins Adams. (Mills & factories in upper State in the 1830's) Canal Town - This is an original printing from 1944. The novel is set in the 1820s in the town of Palmyra, New York, near Rochester, located on the Erie Canal. The novel opens in 1820, when the construction of the Erie Canal had just begun, but has not reached Palmyra, and most of the town is looking forward to the economic boom the Canal is expected to bring.During the course of the book, Adams depicts the changes in the daily life brought about by the construction of the canal. By the close of the book, citizens in Palmyra are regularly and casually travelling to Rochester via packet boat on the canal, or to New York by canal packet to Albany and thence by steam packet down the Hudson.A classic historical novel of a young doctor and the Erie Canal, which brought with it to Western New York not only progress and prosperity but unforeseen upheavals.“[An] elaborate, colorful, and affectionate portrait of a canal town in its growing pains. Obviously [Samuel Hopkins] Adams has not only gone back to the sources but has lived with them for a long time before writing his account of a young doctor setting up his practice.Book cover has aged discoloration. But the textured hard binding in great shape. Pages and binding are in Excellent condition. Though this book has evidence to show it use to be a library book. Photos included. Historical Fiction, Speculative Fiction. Classic Literature 19th Century. Sunrise to Sunset - Overall for the age, the book is in decent shape. Better than Fair, but not GREAT. The Binding and pages nice and firm. This did use to be a library book. There is tape at the bottom of the cover and some light wear on the cover edges. Photo's included. this is another of Samuel Hopkins Adams' romantic novels, richly documented with obscure and fascinating regional lore, language and customs. Against a warm, colorful yet completely authentic background, Mr. Adams weaves the unusual love story of Obedience (Becky) Webb, a lovely and ambitious young factory girl, and Guy Roy, handsome and wealthy manufacturer. The years between Becky and Guy's first meeting and the day when at last they could find happiness together are marked by events both joyous and tragic--by suspense, murder, a gripping man hung, by Becky's strange marriage to the self-righteous mill owner, Gurdon Stockwell. Not until Stockwell's violent end is the way paved to freedom for Becky and to a new era in an industry which had been notorious for ruthless treatment of its workers. The period and setting are based on the development of cotton mills and factories in upper New York State in the 1830's, the exploitation of female labor and the establishment of the first humane laws regulating working conditions in the mills. Mr. Adams' painstaking reconstruction of the atmosphere of the times adds immeasurably to the reader's delight in this romance of another day.
