Description: 1937-1940 Letter Lot 15+ Greece-USA (English) Thessalonika Fair King War Stamps This is a terrific lot of letters written by a young lady in Thessalonika, Greece to a young American woman in New York. The writer is at first employed in a cigarette factory and then as a teacher at American College in her home city. There is a letter and a cigarette factory postcard from 1937, 4 letters from 1938 and then 10 combined in 1939-1940. The letters are well written, many are typed. Her English improves significantly in a short period of time. There is talk of her family, social events, picnics, the International Fair in Thessalonika and the King coming to visit, the New York World's Fair, movies, plays, etc and several references to the political situation in Europe ("Europeans know better that to go to war again" she says in May 1939, a reference to commerce being restricted by October). She includes a photo birthday card, several small ink sketches, a small fashion handkerchief as a gift, a pair of split at the fold actress magazine pictures. There are 43 postage stamps, many different, on both front and back of envelopes, and a neat poster stamp for the Thessalonika Fair. Very clean lot, interesting content gives a clear image of the hopes and aspirations of a young woman right up to the invasion of Greece by Italy in October 1940.
