The Baltic Regiment was formed on December 29, 1918. from students of the DERPTS UNIVERSITY and the Riga Polytechnic Institute, as the Baltic Volunteer Battalion. From December 1918, the battalion was part of the first Estonian division, as a mounted machine gun team of the 5th Rakvere Infantry Regiment. The team was renamed the Baltic battalion on January 1, 1919. From May to November 1919, under the name Volunteer Baltic Regiment, it was operationally subordinate to the Northern Corps, and then to the Northwestern Army. By the beginning of 1919, it had 400 bayonets, squadron of 100 sabers and two guns. Russians served in the regiment - about 270 people and Estonians - about 160 people.
