A series of great Edison Diamond Discs, Pathe, Rex, Lyric, Operaphone and other Vertical format recordsClick this link for more great Edison, Pathe and Vertical Records in my other listings! From the Collection of the eminent Edison scholar, the late Raymond Wile.FIRST Pre-CATALOG Edison Diamond Disc 1912 No 50036, this was the first release of Diamond Discs in 1912, which were then eliminated by August 1 1913.The new Edison Disc Phonograph was shown for the first time publicly at the Fifth Annual Convention for the National Association of Talking Machine Jobbers at Milwaukee, Wisconsin, on July 10-13th, 1911. In early 1912 Edison offered 3 Diamond Disc Phonograph Models for sale, along with a small number of Diamond Disc. These early discs were intended as demonstration records for the machine, and were issued before the first regular catalog in 1913. In the files these are labeled as DEMONSTRATION, they are also called pre-catalog, preliminary couplings or preliminary issues. One hallmark of these early issues is the matrix number in mirror script. This means the matrix was not marked on the wax, but on the first metal master. All pre-catalog masters are unique, and were remade for the regular 1913 catalog. Most pre-catalog numbers were deleted in 1913, only about a dozen catalog numbers were carried over into the regular catalog Rec Numb 80094-R 80094-L Master 1299-10 1102-23 Title Stephanie-Gavotte (Alphons Czibulka) Birds of spring - Yorke (Rounsville Williams) Artist American (O-symphonic) American (O-symphonic) Recorded 1912.10.1 1912.06.24/5 Place NYC NYC Comment acoustic acoustic Comment demonstration, New Master January/ February 1914/ Late 1913 Physical DescriptionTHE Matrix-Take combinations for both sides are not documented in the Edison Discography,Both sides were re-recorded in 1913 with the same matrix numbers and the usual A,B,C takes80094-RMatrix No 1299-10Label has no stippling, the faceplate border is lumpy, looks like a bad soldering jobSpecial Number at 12 o'clock 1653Ring size Regular80094-LMatrix No 1102-2323 takes were recorded until a good one was obtainedSpecial Number at 12 o'clock 1429Ring size RegularThis matching was one of a preliminary series which lasted unitl August 1 1913. All were made using the Transfer process (Laminated Record). All are extremely rare and often show lamination damage.Few observations of my own: The spindle hole inside shows a cinnamon brown core. The L label has a stippled matte backgroundThe R label has no matte background at all and has a crude unfinished look the matting was a separate step that was omitted here.Pre-CATALOG Edison Diamond Disc 1912 10" 78 rpm recording. Please note that all 1912 Diamond disc pressings have lamination issues, such as cracks, chips or lifted areas.Condition: EXCELLENT with some issues: NO LAMINATION CRACKS, blank rim has slight lifting, does not affect play, record slightly dished. R side has small edge chip not touching grooves, a short brown groove cause split second light hiss. L Side has a hint of wear/ stressed groove at start does not sound. Small matte area on surface does not sound. If for any reason your transaction was NOT SATISFACTORY, pls contact me and I will work something out with you. YOU WILL NEVER HAVE A REASON TO GIVE ME A NEGATIVE RATING or a LOW STAR RATING. Quick note on grading: The Grade (Excellent to Poor, I don't give Mint) refers to the WEAR of the record. Any other defects are stated separately When I listen to a record, I may also give it an aural grade (again E to P), and make a SUBJECTIVE judgment of the pressing quality for hiss and surface noise."EXCEPTIONALLY QUIET" is close to noiseless, like a vinyl pressing."VERY QUIET" is an above average quiet record for a given pressing."Quiet" is a record that is a great example with some noise. These judgments are SUBJECTIVE and will depend one the styli, phonograph etc. you use on your own equipment. Multiple item shipping: I am happy to combine items for shipment in one parcel.
