Description: "The Geology of England and Wales with notes on the Physical Features of the Country. By Horace B. Woodward F.G.S., of the Geological Survey of England and Wales. Second Edition. With Geological Map and Illustrations. London: George Philip & Son, 32 Fleet Street. Liverpool: Caxton Buildings, South John Street; and 45 to 51 South Castle Street. 1887." A comprehensive guide to the geology of England and Wales by a distinguished geologist,a presentation copy to another distinguished geologist. On the front endpaper is found the book label of 'Professor James Geikie' and, pasted onto the free endpaper, a letter to Professor Geikie from Woodward, on paper with the embossed Geological Survey stamp. The letter reads:'You will in a few days receive a copy of my Geology England & Wales, with the best regards of the writer. I trust your patience has not been entirely exhausted, but if you love quantity you will not I believe be greatly disappointed. Yours very truly, Horace B. Woodward.'The letter is dated 12th April (18)87.The title page is inscribed 'With the Author's Compliments.' Horace Woodward (1848 - 1914) was a member of the Geological Survey of England and Wales from 1867 - 1908. He came from a family of geologists, and was awarded the Wollaston medal in 1909.James Geikie (1839 - 1915) was the younger brother of Archibald Geikie, and Professor of Geology at Edinburgh University from 1882 - 1914. His main interest was glaciation, and John Muir named a glacier in Alaska after him. A comprehensive volume, with occasional lovely touches such as the little vignette found at the end of the book (see photograph). It is signed 'A-BW' - or is it a drawing by Horace himself? There is another earlier on. The map is mounted on linen. It is folded so as to fit into the pocket at the back of the book, but it would be an extremely tight fit, and I will not be trying to get it in there! It is, however, the correct map, with an inscription in ink on the linen stating it is the map for Woodward's Geology...., and with the printed title "Map to Illustrate the Geology of England & Wales by Horace B. Woodward, Drawn by J.G. Goodchild." The map unfolded measures approx. 64cms x 54cms. With the map, this makes for a fine antique geological item with interesting provenance. One of four important geological and geographical books I have reduced and offer on auction this week. Please see my other items. Size: the covers measure approx. 22.5cms x 15.5cms. 670 pages.Condition: At some point I think the covers, which are original, have been re-attached to the textblock. It has been done very neatly, aside from a crease down the spine (which is nothing to worry about structurally!) and the book is now a good tight copy. A little bit of foxing early on, the letter particularly so, but in general the text is in a good condition. The map is in a very good condition. It is mounted on linen, slightly fraying at the edges, and with a neat inscription in ink on the linen "Geological Map belonging to H.B. Woodward's Geology of England and Wales." Postage: £7.50 within the UK. £16.00 to Europe, £30.00 to USA etc.I have other antique Books, Maps, Prints etc. in my ebay shop - please see my other items.
