Description: Original c.1863 CDV showing a young African American boy marching with a broom. These were produced in order to encourage the enlistment of black men in the Civil War. The original cartoon, titled, "Colored Volunteer" was drawn by Thomas Nast. On the back in period pencil is a poem:we meet we part with smile and tearwe live and die and pass away [illegible] 4" x 2 1/2" with clipped corners; light wear, soiling, stains, as shown.
