Description: HARPER'S NEW MONTHLY MAGAZINE VOLUME XVII JUNE TO NOVEMBER 1858 1858 HARPER & BROTHERS NEW YORK HALF-BOUND LEATHER 864 pp As usual with any given bound volume of Harper's New Monthly Magazine, there is way too much to list all of the contents, so I'll give you the highlights, listed below. I should mention however that this volume contains 401 Engraved Illustrations. HIGHLIGHTS THE CITY OF ELMS (NEW HAVEN, CONNECTICUT) {ILLUSTRATED} THE VIRGINIANS by WILLIAM MAKEPEACE THACKERAY {ILLUSTRATED} TROPICAL JOURNEYINGS - PANAMA {ILLUSTRATED} A NIGHT SCENE (POEM) by WILLIAM CULLEN BRYANT FRANCIS MARION (THE SWAMP FOX) {ILLUSTRATED} A JOURNEY THROUGH THE LAND OF THE AZTECS (MEXICO & GUATEMALA) {ILLUSTRATED} CARACAS {ILLUSTRATED} A WINTER IN THE SOUTH {ILLUSTRATED} THE ROMANCE OF WYOMING {ILLUSTRATED} VAGABONDIZING IN BELGIUM {ILLUSTRATED} TRIBES OF THE THIRTY-FIFTH PARALLEL (WEST OF THE MISSISSIPPI){ILLUSTRATED} THE DEATH OF KING LOUIS XVI OF FRANCE by JOHN C. ABBOTT {ILLUSTRATED} STRAIN'S RIDE OVER THE ANDES {ILLUSTRATED} ISLANDS AND SHORES OF GREECE {ILLUSTRATED} THE AMERICAN DEER: ITS HABITS AND ASSOCIATIONS by T. B. THORPE {ILLUSTRATED} ETHAN ALLEN by BENJAMIN J. LOSSING {ILLUSTRATED} THE VOYAGE OF PAUL (IN THE MIDDLE EAST) {ILLUSTRATED} STRAIN'S GALLOP ACROSS THE PAMPAS {ILLUSTRATED} Of course there is much more than that, but it is certainly enough to give you an idea. Those listed above have many more illustrations than the sample ones shown here. Also, every month has LADIES' FASHION ENGRAVINGS and a CARTOON STRIP. I chose the sample illustrations to give an over-all idea of what is in this volume. There are likely better ones, but you'll just have to purchase this volume to see them all. The illustration of the witch on her broomstick is one of the earliest ones I've seen, but I understand earlier images date back to the 1400s. Still pretty cool. Compared to many old bound volumes of Harper's New Monthly, the binding on this one is really pretty good, not falling apart or ready to fall apart like so many you see for sale. There are a few wear spots, but this one is really SOLID. It should last for years and years. There is some scattered foxing (sparse in many places) but that's to be expected. 6 1/4" x 10" x 2 1/4"
