1800, The True History of The Conquest of Mexico by Captain Bernal Diaz, LEATHER

Description: This "True History of the Conquest of Mexico" was first penned by Captain Bernal Diaz del Castillo in 1576, with a recognized first publication in 1632. My research suggests that this is the FIRST ENGLISH TRANSLATION by Maurice Keatinge, published in 1800 by London, Printed for J. Wright, Piccadilly, by John Dean, High Street, Congleton. This 3/4 Leather rendition is in VERY GOOD CONDITION. Spine with four raised bands, clear gilt titling and decoration. Boards with moderate to heavy corner and top/bottom wear, light to moderate edge wear, marble boards around the leather spine and corners. Matching endpapers with a "Sir Robert Throckmorton Bart." bookplate behind the front board - more on that below. With a handsome frontispiece plan of the city and lake of Mexico; there is light foxing marks on this frontispiece. 514 solidly bound pages, ending with a page of notes and errata, no marks or tears, some light waviness due to age, not any moisture impact. THE BOOKPLATE IS FROM AN INDIVIDUAL DESCENDING FROM THE THE NOTED THROCKMORTON FAMILY OF THE UK. I've been looking but can't find the exact same one but a similar one on Flickr which shows the left half of the main shield, the elephant, and the same name below - the description of that one reads, ".. features a shield with a simple striped chevron and a sinister hand. The crest features a demi-elephant." The famous "Throckmorton" family dates back to the 1400s. This "chevron", or the upside down striped V, originates with this famous family. From a Wikipedia entry on this very chevron: "Arms of Throckmorton: Gules, on a chevron argent three bars gemelles sable. Crest: A falcon rising proper belled and jessed or. Mottos: (1): Virtus Sola Nobilitas (Virtue is the only nobility); (2): Moribus Antiquis (With ancient manners)" I note that this motto, Virtus Sola Nobilitas, appears on this bookplate. Finally, I might speculate that this bookplate could that of Sir Robert Throckmorton, 8th Baronet, based on the name and when this Throckmorton was alive. From Wikipedia on this descendant: "Sir Robert George Throckmorton, 8th Baronet (5 December 1800 – 28 June 1862) was an English Whig and Liberal politician who sat in the House of Commons from 1831 to 1835." A description of the book from an online listing: "Díaz del Castillo was a member of Cortés' original expeditionary force and participated in all its aspects, from the planning stages in Havana to the acquisition of Doña Marina as an interpreter, to the first contact with emissaries of Montezuma, through the 'Noche Triste' and the murderous retreat from Tenochtitlán, to the final fall of the Aztec empire. Díaz del Castillo went on to participate in later expeditions of discovery and conquest, and was a founding father of Santiago de los Caballeros de Guatemala. The True History of the Conquest of Mexico remains a primary source for this dramatic and often tragic clash of the Old World with the New, and is a foundation work for any collection of Americana. Written in 1568, Díaz del Castillo's history was first published in Madrid in 1632 as Historia Verdadera de la Conquista de la Nueva España." Cliff's Books B2
