While valid for first class airmail, this small stamp was used primarily to send picture postcards via airmail. (That way the greeting could arrive before the vacationer returned home!) Of note, this stamp is the same design as C50 issued in red. Notice how the design is very similar to the old American Airlines logo. A bit more history: The United States Post Office issued its first stamp on July 1, 1847. Since that time, over 5000 stamps have been released. Each stamp is given its own identification number called a Scott Number. This stamp has been designated as Scott Number C48.
